The Problem

Our ozone layer is being depleted from CFCs (chloroflurocarbons), which allow in ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays are extremely dangerous. They can cause sever skin problems. This increases skin cancer which leads to more deaths per year from cancer.

The Cause

The cause of this problem with ultraviolet rays is CFCs (chloroflurocarbons). As we release more and more of these they rise up into the atmosphere and eat away at the ozone layer. These can stay in the atmosphere for 20-100 YEARS!!! As these CFCs rise in the air they break down when exposed to ultraviolet rays.(See visual aid by Mike Pluth here) Then they release chlorine atoms which then eat away at the atmoshpere's ozone layer. Serveral things produce CFCs. Some of the worst offenders are aerosol cans, refrigerators, and the process of making styrafoam. (See visual aid by Mike Pluth of CFC production here) All of these release massive quantities of CFCs into the atmosphere.

The Solution

Even if we able to stop putting CFCs into the atmospere immediately, the damaging effect would last for years to come. The reason is CFCs have a very long life. But, if we start now, sooner or later the problem will disappear. Somethings we can do include...
